October LDS General Conference 2009

Conference Center

General Conference attendees crowd into the Conference Center Auditorium

I hope that as you looked around for TV programs to watch this past weekend, you encountered broadcasts of LDS General Conference among the things you saw available on television. It was definitely a memorable conference for me. The choirs sang some wonderful music, my brother was the director for the Saturday evening Priesthood session, the organists for each of the conference sessions are people I know. The talks were very timely and memorable. President Monson announced five new temples including one for Brigham City, Utah. The Presiding Bishop spoke about honesty and many other similarly-spelled words.

Elder Holland holds the Book of Mormon that belonged to Hyrum Smith

Elder Holland passionately proclaimed the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon and its divine origin with the actual book owned by Hyrum Smith in his hand. We heard from numerous General Authorities who were native speakers of other languages, more than I can ever remember ever hearing before. The church is truly becoming very international. There are more members of the LDS church outside of the United States than in the United States. More members speak Spanish than English. It is amazing how the truth is being accepted by people around the globe. An outline of the speakers and their talks from each Conference session is available on the LDS Church News website at http://www.ldschurchnews.com/conference/
Witnesses of the Dedication

Witnesses of the Cameroon Dedication

During a historic 16-day tour of Africa on Aug. 16-31, Elder Jeffrey R. Holland of the Quorum of the Twelve dedicated Cameroon and Rwanda for the preaching of the gospel. In so doing, he became the first known apostle to ever set foot in either nation. It was a memorable occasion for everyone there to visit with him and witness the dedication of these great lands for the preaching of the gospel. “These were days not soon to be forgotten” will be entered in the diaries of many who were witnesses of these events.

First snow in Utah County

Snow and fall leaves on Timpanogos

Snow and fall leaves on Timpanogos

On October 1st we had snow in the mountains of Utah, as far south as Utah and Carbon Counties. Here is a photo of Mt. Timpanogos (11,749 ft.) that I took today looking at the mountain from the west. You can see the fall leaves that remain after the rain and wind the past few days. The weather is unseasonably cool, with many northern Utah valleys reaching below the freezing mark overnight in the past two days. The low in our area is forecast to be 33 degrees tonight. It is already 37 degrees right now, with mostly clear skies. It is very nice to have it be cool but we have not really seen fall weather as high temps were in the 85-90 degree range less than a week ago. We hope that real fall weather will return for at least several weeks. It frequently snows before November but here’s hoping that the first winter weather waits at least until Halloween (Oct. 31) or later.

Moved back home tonight … finally!

September 30th, 2009

We moved back in today among stacks of boxes and many items out of place for the moment. We are very thankful to be back in our own place and to have the conveniences we are blessed to have. It has been three months since we have been able to live here. We still hope to persuade the insurance company that they should re-imburse us for more of the repair and renewal expenses than the adjuster feels we are entitled to. We had considered changing from Farmers Insurance to our auto provider, State Farm, and since this issue we have wished we had because of the way we have been treated by our adjuster. Hopefully a discussion with the agent will take place and we can get a few more things straightened out. Thanks to everyone for your help and time as we went through the renovation and repair process to get things ready.

Fall Appears to Have Arrived

Provo Canyon

Here are some fall pictures I took today when Mom and I took Kristen and Grandma for a short drive during lunch. We went up Provo Canyon and then up the South Fork of Provo Canyon just a few miles. I was not able to see the fall colors the past few years before storms came and most of the leaves were off of the trees. Grandma said that when they lived in the east they always wanted to travel to Vermont to see the fall colors. She added that the colors there could not be any more brilliant than those we were seeing today. The east usually has spectacular colors in the fall. So, I hope that you easterners enjoy these few pics taken in the west. Enjoy the brilliant colors!

Not moved in yet…

September 27th, 2009

We still have a few things to move around to make room so we can move in. There are many things in the bedrooms, especially Kristen’s but maybe we can get that taken care of Monday. I will keep you posted.
Aunt Carma is back in the hospital with pneumonia and other complications. Please pray for her and her family.

The Living Room is DONE!

September 25th, 2009

We have finally passed a major milestone in the remodeling of our home with the completion of the living room today.

Last night Uncle Tom and Aunt Janice came over the help Mom and Kristen paint while I was at choir rehearsal. Thank you Tom and Janice for your help! Mom and I came early to finish up and touch up a few things, and Van Farnworth came over to help me move the larger furniture out of the living room. The carpet man came on time at 9am. He worked until about noon and was done. We then began planning a few changes to the way things are arranged. Quentin came from a funeral just in time to help move the piano into place, and stayed to help move other things in for us. There are still a few little details to finish including cutting in the perimeter of the living room windows after repairing the slight damage to the plaster from moisture and the weather. These little things need to be taken care of before we can hang the curtains, but otherwise it is finished.

As Quentin and I were moving in the couch and love seat we found that most of the springs in these two were broken. We are going to try and repair them (the sectional in the Family Room also has broken springs) so they will be more fresh and “like new” in the near future. We hope to move in TODAY (Saturday) so we are here Sunday morning! Hurrah! It will be nice having our own place again. It has been three months since we were able to live here. What do you think of the new color instead of the same off-white everywhere? Mom chose this green color but thinks it is too dark, but it does look very nice. Grandma Hill has been so accomdating to us and we are very grateful that she made some space for us while we have been working on this project. The project is not completed, but the upstairs is almost finished. Then we have the basement areas to focus on as we get ready for Devin and Emily’s visit (“wahoo”, as Emily would say)! Thank you for your encouragement and help. Quentin came along today just in time to help us get the piano back in place along with many other things.

Tabernacle Choir records with Andrea Bocelli

Andrea Bocelli and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir

Andrea Bocelli and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir

The Church News of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints has the story on their website of the experience the choir had with David Foster and Andrea Bocelli a few weeks ago. (See my entry for Sept. 11 regarding our own recording of a song these two made famous as composer and performer.) It was a wonderful experience, one that ended a very long week of recording for the choir and orchestra that began Tuesday evening and went each evening from 6:45 to 10pm and Saturday from 10am until 5:30 pm. What a special bonus for us at the end of a very long week! It was also a long day for me, as I worked Friday night and went directly to the sessions on Saturday. I had been up for more than 24 hours at this point. The photo above was published on the Church News internet site as part of the published story. I hope you will go and see see it online at http://www.ldschurchnews.com/articles/57913/Renowned-tenor-visits-Tabernacle.html. Also, Church Public Communications has posted a short movie on YouTube from the sessions that includes shots of both Mr. Bocelli and Mr. Foster with the choir and orchestra. Moving Back In

September 21st, 2009

Things are messy but getting straightened out

Things are messy but getting straightened out

We are moving back into the office and hope to move back into our home in the next few days! We want to paint the living room as soon as possible and then have carpet put there and in the hallway. Then we will really be moved in because we will have a place to see people and relax. The basement still needs a lot of work including paint and carpet. The sheetrock has been finished but the painting and carpet needs to be done. We also need to replace the bathroom floor in the basement but that needed to be done before the flood. The extra moisture just made it more neccessary. We have a spare bedroom for visitors (hint, hint!). Thank you for all your encouragement! We look forward to seeing you soon!
Mom and Grandma have seen Aunt Carma and she is doing remakably well despite the open-heart surgery she underwent last week. We hope she continues with her quick recovery and look forward to seeing her back at home soon. It was miraculous that she was able to be treated as quickly as she was, and the speed of her recovery has everyone very surprised. Please keep praying for her and for her family.
