One More Room Finished

The smallest room in the house

The smallest room in the house

East wall tile and floor

East wall tile and floor

I have finished the bathroom with the exception of a couple of 5-minute jobs that I hope to do during the day Saturday: caulking the bottom of the tile along the bottom of the walls, and installing and caulking the spalsh around the sink. Mom wants to thoroughly wash the sink and spalsh components before I glue them in. I wanted you to see how nice the tile along the wall looks in place of the oak baseboard. No vent cover installed yet, so that looks a little unfinished.

Plumbing is something I can do but requires quite a bit of patience. Mom and I were trying to get the bathtub drain back in and it wasn’t working well. She asked me if we’d had our prayer for the day and I said we hadn’t, because I went straight to our house from work that day and the next. We prayed and asked for help getting the drain installed. After our prayer we tried again and it worked quickly and properly, which rather surprised me that we would get an answer so quickly. No task is too trivial to ask for divine help with. I am grateful that Mom would suggest that we pray about it; the result was that we were successful and the drain is now installed and working.

Aunt Carma’s Health Emergency

September 17th, 2009

We heard today that Aunt Carma was up during the night in a lot of pain but waited about 4 hours to call her daughter Jeannine at about 6am. When examined at the hospital they found she had an apparent aortic dissection. Wikipedia explains, “Aortic dissection is a tear in the wall of the aorta that causes blood to flow between the layers of the wall of the aorta and force the layers apart. Aortic dissection is a medical emergency and can quickly lead to death, even with optimal treatment. If the dissection tears the aorta completely open (through all three layers), massive and rapid blood loss occurs. Aortic dissections resulting in rupture have an 80% mortality rate, and 50% of patients die before they even reach the hospital. If the dissection reaches 6 cm, the patient must be taken for emergency surgery.” My best friend from high school, Doug Buhler, had this same condition only a few months ago and is reported to be doing extremely well now after his open-heart surgery. It is frequently a condition shared by siblings; his sister also had this same condition a few years ago and is also doing fine after treatment.

Aunt Carma went in for open-heart surgery this afternoon and is reported to be doing well after some extensive procedures that took about 8 hours. Although her age (82) is against her she is very healthy so this is something that is advantageous for her. Please pray for her speedy recovery with the rest of us!

Work at home continues.

Latest Kitchen look w/carpet!

Latest Kitchen look w/carpet!

We are making steady progress on the restoration of our home. I wanted to post a photo of the current state of the kitchen so here it is.

You will notice that we still need light fixtures too. I want at least one of them to have a ceiling fan but the others are not too sure of this. Fell free to share your comments in this or any other regard.

The office has been completed and we are moving things back into it this week, as well as working on plumbing in the bathroom. I purchased a new toilet and a new faucet for the sink as well as drain equipment for the tub. I replaced the water valves which were the friction type with a rubber washer with ball valves that should be easier to use, and should last just as long if not longer. The “baseboard” in the bathroom will be done with tile this time which should look really sharp. (We hope to also do the bathroom in the basement in a like manner.) I will post a photo of this work soon, when it is completed.

We really appreciate your encouragement and really hope to be back in our own home really soon. It has been a long summer away, but we really appreciate Grandma’s willingness to put us up. She is a gem. We just want to give her a little more peace and hope to do so soon.

The Prayer

September 11th, 2009

In this evening’s recording session (the fourth of six this week), the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square recorded a Mack Wilberg arrangement of “The Prayer”. This song has resonated with many people around the world, as sung by Charlotte Church & Josh Groban, and also by Celine Dion & Andrea Bocelli. The music was written by David Foster. It is in both English and Italian. I really enjoyed singing in Italian again! The choir really enjoyed singing it and we are looking forward to the release of the new CD with this piece on it sometime in the next several months. This is representative of the kind of music on the recording: music of peace, reflection, and introspection. The CD contains mostly very quiet, peaceful music. Here are the words to this popular song that we recorded today. I hope you can see the message contained in the music.

The Prayer
I pray you’ll be our eyes
And watch us where we go
And help us to be wise
In times when we don’t know
Let this be our prayer
As we go our way
Lead us to a place
Guide us with your grace
To a place where we’ll be safe

La luce che tu dai
I pray we’ll find your light
Nel cuore restero
And hold it in our hearts
A ricordarci che
When stars go out each night
L’eterna stella sei
Nella mia preghiera
Let this be our prayer
Quanta fede c’e
When shadows fill our day
Lead us to a place
Guide us with your grace
Give us faith so we’ll be safe.

Sognamo un mondo senza piu violenza
Un mondo di giustizia e di speranza
Ognuno dia la mano al suo vicino
Simbolo di pace e di fraternita

La forza che ci dai
We ask that life be kind
E’il desiderio che
And watch us from above
Ognuno trovi amore
We hope each soul will find
Intorno e dentro a se
Another soul to love
Let this be our prayer
Let this be our prayer
Just like every child
Just like every child
Needs to find a place,
Guide us with your grace
Give us faith so we’ll be safe

E la fede che
Hai acceso in noi
Sento che ci salvera.

Happy Birthday Mom!

September 9th, 2009

Mom’s birthday is today and we want to wish her a great day!

Happy Birthday!

Happy Birthday!

We celebrated the event a little early on Monday night because of family conflicts, and the fact the Melodie will be gone back to BYU-Idaho this week and gone on Mom’s actual birthday. We had a nice barbecue in their lovely back yard with Rosie and Derek, Ethan and Julia, Charlotte and Andrew (and Daphne), and Quentin was able to come for a while. Daphne is our 14th grandchild, but we found out today that we are expecting a 15th grandchild! We will let you know about it when we get permission to do so!

Tabernacle Choir Recording a New CD

September 9th, 2009

The Tabernacle Choir has begun another series of recording sessions in the Tabernacle in Salt Lake City for a CD to be released later this year. (Notice the quilts placed on the benches of the main floor of the photo below, to slighly warm the famous accoustics of this historic building.)

Choir and Orchestra prepare to begin session

Choir and Orchestra prepare to begin session

It will feature music of reflection and of quite comtemplation, and be different in this way. It will contrast with many of the choirs CDs which boast the huge sound of the 360-voice choir and 100-piece orchestra that will really raise one’s pulse with the huge, dramatic sound that results. This album will show how softly the huge forces can sing and how tenderly the lyrics can be sung to the delicate musical accompaniment. Sessions will take the entire week of evenings and all day on Saturday. A special videotaping session during the series will create a music video with singer Andrea Bocelli and pianist-composer David Foster with the choir, featuring them in the well-known song, “The Prayer” which is sung in Italian and English. We look forward to seeing the product in its finished form as well as the CD that will result. The choir will soon release a new CD and DVD for Christmas that was compiled from last year’s Christmas Concerts. The DVD features the entire concert with Baritone Brian Stokes Mitchell and actor Edward Herrmann which was widely praised as a triumph last year. You may want to see more information about these and other widely-acclaimed recordings of the choir and orchestra at http://mormontabernaclechoir.org/products/.

Daphne receives her name and blessing

September 6th, 2009

It is a custom in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints to give infants a name and a father’s blessing shortly after birth.

Sleeping in white

This can be compared in some ways to what is known as “christening” of other faiths, but is not a baptism. It is an official ordinance and is recorded on the records of the church, and a certificate is also created for the event. We were thrilled to participate with Andrew and Charlotte in the blessing of Daphne today.

Andrew’s family very kindly invited us to dinner at their home after the meeting and we took a few photos of the occasion. It was a very happy day for us all. Melodie took this picture of the proud parents and grandparents that we share with you.

A Violin for Sanja

September 2nd, 2009

I have sent a 3/4 size violin with Grandpa and Grandma Dastrup who are traveling to Cincinnati to help David and Tamara take care of their family during Tamara’s upcoming oral surgery and removal of a cyst from her wrist. The violin is for Sanja to use. This is a precious keepsake that I hope she will cherish and take good care of. I want to tell her a little bit about it here.

Violin in a new case

Violin in a new case

This is the very instrument I used as a young boy myself when I was a beginner. I started taking lessons when I was just a few years younger then you, at the age of eight. I was already taking piano lessons. I believe this violin belonged to my grandpa Hendriksen but I don’t know where or when he got it. This probably means that it is close to 100 years old. (I got you a nice, new case from Uncle Tom because the old one was not in very good condition for taking to school or lessons.)

Violin looking at the top

When we got this instrument it needed some work so it was taken to Dale Stevens for the job. I bought a new violin from him many years later in my junior year of high school which I still play.

This 3/4 size violin has wonderful tone for an instrument of its size. It does not look like a nice new instrument, but that is one if its beauties: it has been well-used but still plays very well. (We probably need to get you some new strings and will sometime soon.) I believe that a few of your relatives have played this instrument also, including Aunt Kristen. They enjoyed playing it, and we hope you will too. You will also notice on this photo that the old case with green interior is shown. The case has served its purpose well and has protected the violin through these many years. Be careful with it and it will serve you well. Then when you get a full-size violin maybe someone else can use it so it retains its usefulness for the future. Love, Grandpa.

Home completion is getting closer!

September 1st, 2009

We have been working day after day at the house and the progress is becoming a little more evident than it has been in the past.

Progress in the Bathroom

Progress in the Bathroom

This photo shows the beautiful job done by the reglazing that was done last week (doesn’t that look great?) and the newly-laid porcelain tile that Derek and I put down a week ago. Rosie did the grout, and it looks wonderful. Thanks Rosie and Derek! I have since been working on the drain in the tub which has been a real challenge but I should have this back in place this week along with new faucet washers and seats for the controls. We also hope to get painting done in the bathrooms (we already have the paint) and purchase a new toilet, and then hopefully we should be in a position to move back in while we get the rest of the house done. There is more work to do in the office and basement, but we are ready to get back in after being displaced for over two months. Grandma Hill has been very accomodating with us (thank you!) but we believe she is also ready to have us back in our own home.

We look forward to the blessing of our newest grandchild, Daphne Helen Green this weekend, and then after Labor Day Melodie will return to BYU-Idaho for school. We will miss her! Mom and I would like to find a day for a mini-trip to some location with the girls before school starts again but don’t know if we will be able to or not.

Life moves forward

August 25th, 2009

Last weekend we went to the last night of this year’s Martin Harris Pageant, called “The Man Who Knew”.

Family members in Clarkston, UT

Family members in Clarkston, UT

This is the story of a man who was misunderstood by his neighbors and peers (and his wife) as he came to understand and accept the teachings of the LDS faith. He fell away from the faithful for many years after the trek to the west, but rejoined them very late in his life.
Pageant Opening: The 3 Witnesses

Pageant Opening: The 3 Witnesses

He never recanted his witness as one of three persons who saw the plates, saw the engravings, and heard the voice of God commanding him to bear witness of what he saw. The pageant used to be over three hours in length and has been shortened to under 1.5 hours which was about right. I understand that it is only presented every-other year, so make your plans soon if you are interested in seeing it in 2011. It requires tickets to control the size of the crowds. We enjoyed it very much. Clarkston UT is only a few miles south of the Idaho/Utah border, west of Logan.

Not quite done yet...

Not quite done yet...

The kitchen is finally done and Mom is moving in dishes and other things that were moved out for the demolition that had to take place before the remodeling and improvements after the flood. This photo was taken before the floor was finished. We still need to purchase a light fixture for the kitcen and install it, but otherwise it is virtually complete.

Julia, Daphne, and Ethan

Julia, Daphne, and Ethan

Last week Rosie’s kids were at Grandma’s for lessons and were quite pleased that Charlotte let them hold Daphne for a few minutes. They were very cute as they held her and watched her reaction when they took her from her mother. She was really good and seemed to enjoy getting to know her cousins. We wish all of her cousins could get to know her better but they are scattered around the globe at the moment.

Wispy late summer clouds

Wispy late summer clouds

The early fall sky is really fascinating to me, especially when the clouds are lightly dispersed like wisps of cotton up in the air. The early morning sunshine lights up the sky and the clouds in such a beautiful manner that I needed to have a photo of it. I hope you enjoy this.
